Shingling A Roof

Use your chalk and tape measure to mark about 12 inches up on the roof for the first set of shingles.

Shingling a roof.

Asphalt roofing shingles simply rely on the force of gravity to shed water from rain or snow melt. So instead the whole roof was removed and the decking was being replaced. Install the next shingle approximately 2 3 past the seal strip of the first shingle. Nail each side of the cap shingle into the roof.

Nail each side of the shingle to each side of the ridge just below the shingles self sealing strip. However the plywood sheathing underneath the shingles was beginning to fail. Starting at the bottom of the roof map out a guideline with chalk. Place the ridge cap shingles over the roof ridges.

Place and nail the shingles from the bottom of the roof to the top. Continue laying roof shingles aligning the top edges with the horizontal chalk lines and the ends with the vertical chalk lines to create the proper 6 inch offset. Remove existing roof and underlayment the original plan was to preserve a portion of the existing roof since the shingles still had some life left in them. Ensure that each cap overlaps the one below it by 1 4 inch 7 cm.

If the roof shingles and all accessory roof components are arranged and overlapped with this in mind the roof should successfully shed water. The cap of each shingle should fall evenly in half over each side of the ridge. Place the first shingle end flush to the edge of the roof. Continue to chalk additional guidelines based on the width of the shingle through at least four courses rows across the roof.
